FRONT/CENTER: PINK IS THE COLOR OF THE MONTH

FRONT/CENTER: PINK IS THE COLOR OF THE MONTH

Make a subtle splash in July with this cheery shade.

Pink as a 2014 color trend isn’t news—blushing hues dotted every spring runway this year. What’s interesting is that, in the middle of summer, pinks are still everywhere.

“We were a little surprised,” says Sydney Feeter, Sephora’s Assistant Buyer in Nails. “Usually during summer, neons see a huge lift [in sales]. And while we did see that lift, we also saw clients choosing really pretty, neutral pinks.”

Electric pinks are making their mark, but according to Feeter, “The ones that are really going off right now are the Lo-Fi pinks.” Sephora trend researchers believe the soft pink nail polish spike correlates with the rising popularity of rosé wine. The food and beauty worlds constantly overlap—for obvious examples, see how Bite Beauty’s lip products are all edible, or how Korres will only source product ingredients from local, organic micro-farms.

In the last decade, rosé has become the summer drink that everyone, foodie or not, has an opinion on. Currently, they are as likely to appear all over the menus of fine restaurants as they are on the shelves of chain grocery stores.

Inexpensive compared to many reds and whites, rosés are an affordable luxury—much like manicures. Indeed, Feeter calls these pink polishes “a little bit more luxe-feeling” than the amped up summer nails we’re used to seeing.

Picture a scarlet-flushed wine glass on an elegant white tablecloth. Then picture it at a garden wedding amongst a floral backdrop, or in a tumbler on your picnic blanket at the beach, or mixed with fruit and soda as you lounge poolside on a balmy afternoon. The look of rosé complements the mood of every summer occasion, which is why it’s everywhere. And their prevalence, according to our trend researchers, is reminding people of pink’s versatility.

In other words, with pink on everyone’s palates, it makes sense that it’s on everyone’s palettes as well. Feeter points out, “There are so many shades that you can easily find the one that complements your skintone and feels fresh and summery without feeling over the top. … I think that’s one reason why the really beautiful, classic pinks coming out from our brands are flying off the shelves.” BECKY PEDERSON
