What’s new in Sephora PRO artist Helen Phillips’ Tool Kit
What inspired you to become a makeup artist?
“I’ve been an artist my whole life. I love to paint, so it was a really natural transition to become a makeup artist. I still paint a lot but I also paint faces now.”
What’s your first beauty memory?
“My aunt used to sit me on top of the bathroom vanity with my feet in the sink and apply makeup on me before holiday get-togethers at my house. All of my childhood photos during this time of year are of me with a big, teased half-up hairdo my mom did, a plaid party dress, red lips, and too much blush.”
How would you describe your personal beauty style?
“My makeup and hair matches my casual style—I just do concealer, mascara, a colored lip stain, and bronzer/blush. My hair is short, so it’s just straight every day. My Southern roots come through when I get ready for a party—I spend much more time and effort! I bouffant my short hair by curling it and brushing it back. For makeup, I wear foundation with a contour and highlight, and either a bright color on my lip or a brown smoky eye to make my eyes pop.”
“I splurged on a Troy Surratt brush and it is rocking my world. It’s so soft! And, I’m convinced brushing my face with something this soft relieves stress…perfect for the holiday season. I load up my brush with a bit of loose powder before I throw it in my bag so I can mattify throughout the day…and have an excuse to brush my face with something so buttery soft.”
“This is my quick complexion fixer upper. It’s a great concealer or foundation and is an easy day-to-nighter because sticks make everything so easy and transportable.”
“I’ve been carrying around the new Laura Mercier Velour Lovers lipstick in case I need to take my look to the next level quickly. It’s so lightweight. I hate wearing lipstick because I always feel it and this formula is so light that I forget that it’s on. The Lancôme Teint Idole Stick is perfect to conceal outside my lips before I apply the Laura Mercier Velour Lipstick—it just makes it pop and look perfected. Nothing is worse than a sloppy lip.”
“I use it on my bottom lashes to mimic my lash extensions that I have on top. It gives a feathered effect, as a bonus, it’s not white! This is great as a one-step product for long lashes.”
THE WINTER BEAUTY TIPS
What wintertime beauty looks do you love?
“I think the look of sequins under the eyes is a cool party look—just one navy sequin or paillette is so rocker and glam. I also love a defined and perfect red lip with everything else looking really natural.”
Dry flaky skin is big problem during winter. What are some tips for choosing and applying makeup under these conditions?
“Give your skin time to drink in your moisturizer, and, of course, exfoliate twice a week. If your skin still has patches after you apply your foundation, wet your beauty blender, then spray it with a hydrating treatment like the Caudalie Beauty Elixir and pat it in. Using the same blender, pat on more foundation if you need more coverage. I am super dry so I have been using Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask a lot. I use it on my knuckles, too, to prevent them from cracking.”
