Hairstylist Cindy Viola shows us a new twist on a summer favorite.
“The finger wave is ideal for curly hair,” explains veteran hairstylist Cindy Viola (codename “Twystilox”), “but it’s a versatile style that works with many hair types.” For a step-by-step tutorial on these effortless (-looking) waves, we ventured to San Francisco’s Secret Agent Salon—known for adding edgy, artistic, and modern twists to any look. We watched as Viola created a modern take on ’20s flapper-inspired waves that would look as good at a beach wedding as for a beach bonfire. LENA PARK

“Section hair into three parts—the top, running about the width of your forehead to the back; the left side of your head; and the right side of your head.”
“Spray each section with a heat protectant hairspray and comb through. Curl hair away from the face using a 1” to 1.25” barrel curling iron. For the top section, make sure each curl rests horizontally on top of the head. For the side sections, curl in ‘candlestick’ formation so that each stands vertical and hugs the side of the head.”

“Loosely pin each curl and let it set and cool.”
“Gently brush out each curl to smooth hair. See where hair naturally creates a ‘C’ shape and use a comb and fingers to define the shape.
Pin the center of each ‘C’ shape and spritz with firm-hold hairspray. Remove clips when hair has cooled.
